11 Home Remedies for Congestion Relief

Home Remedies Congestion Relief

Being congested ranges from mildly annoying to debilitating. Usually, we grab some tablets, but there are other drug-free methods to get relief from congestion. These 11 home remedies will save you a trip to the drugstore!

Not sure which essential oil to use? Our post on essential oils for congestion will help you.

1. Inhaling directly for congestion relief

Add a few drops of essential oil to a tissue, cloth, or cotton ball and gently breathe in for a few minutes, holding it close to your face. It could also be placed on a nearby surface if you’re working at a desk or kept in your pocket, to be used later, if you’re out and about.  Another popular method is to wear a bracelet made up of your favorite crystals and some lava beads. A few drops of essential oils can be added to the lava beads and these can be inhaled throughout the day!

The Psychic Tree has a good range of these bracelets.

Alternatively, it can be put under or on your pillow while you sleep. For portability, you may even prefer a nasal stick with infused essential oils and menthol.

2. Adding to firewood for congestion relief

Add a few drops of essential oil to your firewood for at least 10-15 minutes before you burn the wood. Putting the drops into the cracks and knots in the wood is a good idea. Don’t put oils on the wood while it’s burning.

3. Topical application for congestion relief

In medicine- the act of applying a substance directly onto the skin or mucous membranes for localized effect” (source)

After you have mixed your essential oil with your carrier oil, done your patch test, and gone over what you must know before you use essential oils, you’re ready to try and relieve some of that congestion. Lightly apply it to your temples, neck, or chest area. Some people will also apply it to the bottoms of their feet. You can use natural creams, lotions, or carrier oils. If you are at a loss on which carrier oils to use, check out our 11 popular carrier oils section.

Rather apply the solution in a few small doses throughout the day, about every 4-6 hours instead of applying one large dose. Not all essential oils are best for topical application as some are “hot” oils, like cinnamon, black pepper, and thyme, and may cause a hot or warming sensation on the skin. Also, remember to use top-quality essential oils.

4. Steam inhalation for congestion relief

Steam Inhalation Essential oil

Add a few drops of essential oils to a bowl of hot water, creating therapeutic steam that will be breathed in. Apart from clearing congested airways, it will also soothe headaches, and promote respiratory comfort.

Boil some water and pour into a large pot or heatproof bowl. Add three to seven drops of essential oil. You can use Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Lemon, Tea Tree, Lavender, or Thyme. Take a towel and cover your head and the container, creating a tent. Position your head directly over it, about 10 inches from the water.

Breathe through your nose, starting with small breaths and gradually increasing the length. Take care not to inhale too deeply, or too quickly to avoid discomfort.  Carry on for up to 10 minutes at a time. Keep your eyes closed to prevent irritating them. The water can be re-heated later the same day and 1-2 more drops of essential can be added after re-boiling.

Have a cool washcloth on hand to wipe away your face sweat!

5. Humidifiers for congestion relief

Humidifier essential oil

Having the right humidity level in your home can help you breathe easier, relieving many congestion symptoms. Humidifiers create mist from the cool water and release it into the air.

Ultrasonic humidifiers have an internal metal diaphragm that vibrates very fast at an inaudible sound frequency. Water droplets are created, and this increases the air’s moisture level. They are effective, quiet (although some dogs feel uncomfortable around them), and don’t use much energy. Can be more expensive, but it may be easier to clean.

Impeller humidifiers have a high-speed spinning disk made of small blades. Water droplets are made by the blade and then move through a mesh screen. The water is broken up and then pushed out through a nozzle, being released into the air.

Evaporative humidifiers use fans to blow air over a wet, absorbent material and propel the moisture into the air. Simple and relatively safe, and less likely to release bacteria and minerals into the air than the other types. Usually cheaper, but may be noisier.

Air washers work with a rotating disc. They add humidity to the air and also clean the air, by removing allergens from the air. Good for places that have dry, impure air. They do however require frequent cleaning and regular maintenance.

Central humidifiers are connected to your house’s plumbing, heating, and air conditioning. Unlike the others, you can control the whole house’s humidity levels. They need to be installed by professionals, don’t need refilling, but must be well maintained.

Warm mist humidifiers (also known as steam mist vaporizers or steam humidifiers) first heat the water before releasing it into the air. If there are bacteria or harmful elements in the water, they will first get destroyed. As it produces hot steam, children and pets need to be kept away.

6. Diffusers for congestion relief

essential oil diffuser

Essential oils can be added to a diffuser to disperse in the air allowing you to breathe in their healing properties.

Evaporative diffusers work by first dropping your essential oil onto a pad or other absorbent material and either a fan will push the evaporated essential oil scent into the air or it just naturally evaporates, like Reed diffusers. This means easy portability, unique designs, and no water required!

Nebulizing diffusers don’t use heat or water and are often considered the most powerful and effective way to diffuse essential oils. A small air pump creates a vacuum and draws the essential oil through a small tube and into a glass chamber where it is atomized into a fine mist using a high-frequency vibration, and then dispersed into the air. Even Personalized nebulizers are available!

Candle diffusers are simple and cheap. Just add a bit of water and a few drops of the essential oil into the small ceramic bowl. Light a tea candle underneath and the aroma will diffuse into the air. There are electronic versions available and even rechargeable options!

Ultrasonic diffusers don’t use heat, but tiny vibrations that move through the water. These carry upwards toward the floating essential oil and are vaporized as a mist. They are quiet and you can even get portable ultrasonic diffusers powered by USB cables!

Heat diffusers use heating elements to slowly evaporate the essential oil into the surrounding air. Some use water to assist in the evaporation process. Usually quiet and quite economical, although care needs to be taken around children and pets because of the heat. Also, not all essential oils are suitable for heat diffusers as some oils are altered under heat.

7. Compresses for congestion relief

essential oil compress

You can add a few drops of essential oils and your carrier oil to a bowl of water. Dunk a cloth in until it’s covered. Wring it out and apply it to the affected area. The water can be cold (with ice) hot from the faucet, or any desired temperature in between, as needed.

8. Baths for congestion relief

Add about 5-20 drops of essential oil mixed in a tablespoon of carrier oil to your bath water. Add the blend just before you get into the bath so the oils don’t evaporate too quickly. You can also rub the oil blend onto your skin before getting into the bath or rub the oil onto your skin as you relax in the bath. Epsom salts or Himalayan sea salt can be added to the bath to make it even more relaxing. To degrease the bath when you’re finished, use sea salt or baking soda and rinse.

9. Saline nasal sprays, Nasal irrigation (also known as sinus flushing, nasal rinsing) for congestion relief

essential oil nasal spray

These include bulb syringes, neti pots, squeeze bottles, and battery-operated pulsed water devices. They simply thin the mucus and help flush it out of the nasal passages. Saline (saltwater) sprays can be bought over the counter and are usually isotonic (the same saline concentration as your body)  or you can make it at home.

Mix 1 or 2 teaspoons of non-iodized salt and 1 teaspoon of baking soda into 8 ounces of distilled, sterile, or previously boiled and cooled water. Tap water can be used if it has been filtered. The solution can be used with a bulb syringe, a Neti pot, a plastic squirt bottle, or your cupped hands. For children, use a half-teaspoon of salt.

Bulb syringes are cheap and can be used for babies, children, and adults. A neti pot (which looks similar to a teapot) has a bigger container area to rinse debris or mucus from your nasal cavity. Squeeze bottles are usually small cylindrical plastic bottles with an extended spout and are squeezed, like the bulb syringes.

All work in the same way by tilting your head over the sink and inserting the solution in one nostril. The solution then flows through into the other nostril and out.

You also get more robust electrical and portable devices where you can adjust the strength and pulse action to suit your needs. These devices would suit someone who suffers from chronic congestion and requires more frequent nasal irrigation.

10. Nasal strips for congestion relief

essential oil nasal strip

These are adhesive strips that are placed on the nose to widen your nostrils and increase your airflow. They are usually stiff pieces of fabric that wrap around the nose and stick to either side of the nostrils. This widens the nostrils and makes it easier for air to flow through the nose and easier to breathe!  Snore Strips adhere to your cheeks instead of going over the nose.

11. Nasal dilator (nasal dilator clip, or nasal stent) for congestion relief

A soft device inserted into your nostrils and similar to nasal strips in that they will widen your nasal passages to improve airflow. Many have trial packs with different sizes for you to try until you’ve found the right fit.  You also get Nasal Dilators where each loop can be adjusted to fit all nose sizes.

However, the Snoreeze Nasal Dilator is fully adjustable and designed to fit all nose sizes. It has two soft loops that gently expand your airways. This increased airflow helps to reduce the effects of nasal congestion and snoring. Each loop can be independently adjusted to achieve the most effective, comfortable fit.

How to make a crystal grid to boost your intentions

Crystal Grid

Whether you want to manifest something or heal more powerfully, crystal grids are a creative and beautiful way to achieve just this. We’ll show you how to make a crystal grid to boost the power or your crystals and intentions.

A crystal grid, while it sounds quite fancy, is simply crystals and other objects arranged in a symmetrical pattern. While there are crystal templates that you can follow, ultimately it’s a personal expression and you should do what feels right for you.

In this article we’ll show you just how easy it is to make a crystal grid. If you’re new to crystals and want to find out more about the different crystals available and what they do before you make your grid, read our article Introducing crystals into your life for health and manifestation.

What is a crystal grid based on?

Crystal grids are based on three basic principles:

1) Power of crystals

Each type of crystal has a certain, inherent energy. When arranged in groups or patterns, this energy is amplified. This energy is further enhanced when you put intent into the crystals by programming them. Find out how to program your crystals before creating your grid.

2) Sacred geometry

All around us in nature, we find repeating patterns, and these patterns have energy. Throughout history, these patterns have been used in architecture, science and religions. Patterns range from those found in microscopic plants and animal life to galaxies far away. These energy patterns create and unify. Sacred geometry is the ancient science that explores and explains these energy patterns. Crystal grids are based on these energy patterns and sacred geometry. Find out more about energy patterns and sacred geometry.

3) Numerology

Numerology is based on the belief that certain numbers and number combinations have specific energies that influence our lives. Some numbers are believed to be more powerful than others. Some crystal grids are arranged in specific number patterns, according to the principles of numerology, to activate the energy of those numbers.

What do I need to create a crystal grid?

  • Crystal grid
  • Center stone
  • Outer crystals/objects
  • Your intent
  • Activation crystal

The crystal grid can be drawn or printed on paper, material, wood, or even designed on the dirt. Any surface is suitable, as long as the base numbers correspond to the spokes (like a bicycle wheel). Some people will adapt their grids to their intent, for instance, if it’s a problem at work, then they will recreate their workplace as their grid.

There are many crystal grids available, some with specific purposes such as the “Seed of Life Grid” for healing. Your whole house may be used as a crystal grid too, by arranging crystals in different rooms.

Grids can be easily downloaded for free. Browse freely and choose one that resonates with you or one designed for a specific purpose like healing.

Crystal-grid-center-stone
Rose quartz center stone with outer crystals

The center stone is an important crystal. Choose a crystal that resonates with you. It could be a well-liked crystal, a favorite crystal, or if you are unsure, use a quartz crystal which is an all-round powerful stone.

The outer crystals/objects can be any crystals, stones, or bits of nature or objects you like.

Your intent or what you need, as opposed to what you want, should be written down. It needs to be specific, positive, and affirming, with no negative words.

Your activation crystal is usually a crystal wand (long crystal with pointed edges) It can be a specific color for your intent such as pink or green for emotional or heart healing. It may also be a crystal for specific intent such as abundance or health.

How do I start?

Step 1: Gather the items you need

Read the section “What do I need to create a crystal grid?” above for a list and description of the items you need.

Step 2: Cleanse your crystals and the room

Find a calm, quiet area where you won’t be disturbed. Just as you cleanse your crystals, so you need to cleanse the room. Open the windows and doors to let the negative energy out. You can also use any of the methods below to cleanse the room, either individually or in combination. Do what feels right for you.

Smoke cleansing

crysal-grid-cleansing
Smoke cleansing

This can be done by lighting a bundle of herbs (California white sage is commonly used, but check that it is ethically sourced). Herbs can be tied into bundles, lit, and when burning, blown out to smoke. They can also be put into small dishes and lit. 30 herbs for cleansing will help you choose the right herbs for your cleansing. Incense or candles may also be used. Palo Santo is commonly used (again, check that it’s ethically sourced).how

Sound

Similar to cleansing crystals, sound can be used to cleanse a room. It is a very easy and user-friendly way of doing so. Sound waves, because of their vibration, break up negative and heavy energy.

Singing bowls and Tingsha

Use singing bowls, Tingsha (two small Tibetan cymbals held together by a chain or piece of leather), a tuning fork, a bell, a chime, chanting a prayer or mantra, or even clapping your hands. Musical instruments could also be used. Find a tool or instrument that excites or resonates with you.

Open the door to the room (and all windows if there are any) and go around the room in a clockwise direction while creating the sounds, starting at the door and ending back at the door. In this way you are “pushing” the negative energy around the room and helping it exit through any windows and the open door.

Salt

Salt can be put in corners, windowsills, or doorways. You can sprinkle the salt directly onto the floor or leave it in small dishes.

Crystals

Certain crystals, known for their clearing properties, can be placed around a room or a home. Black tourmaline or selenite can be used to clear negative energy.

Step 3: Set out your crystal grid

Decide on the type of grid you want to use. Some are designed for certain purposes such as protection. Others are based on numbers. If you’re good at sewing, here is a downloadable crystal grid pattern.

Choose a place where the grid won’t be disturbed and start by placing your focal centre stone. Arrange the other crystals/objects in rings around the center stone in a spokes pattern. Get a feel for it and soon you’ll be arranging instinctively.

Step 4: Charge your crystal grid

Take your activation crystal, touch the focal center stone, and then touch a stone in the adjacent ring. Go back and touch the center stone and then the next stone in the adjacent ring, then back to the center stone, and so on, until all the stones have been touched. Some people prefer to start from the outside circle and work their way inwards towards the center stone. You should repeat this as many times as it feels necessary.

Try to leave the grid in place for at least a day or two, or as long as you feel necessary.

Crystal grid numbers – what they mean

There are three basic crystal grid patterns based on the numbers 2, 3, or 5. There are a further two special grids based on the numbers 7 and 9 that are higher vibration numbers.

Number 2 crystal grids

Patterns of 2,4,8, or 16 spokes are based on this crystal pattern. Numbers that have a base of 2 are manifesting numbers and may help to change or make things happen. The numbers enable transformation and can be well used where change is needed for healing work.

Number 3 crystal grids

Patterns of 3,6, or 12 spokes are based on this crystal pattern. They resemble hexagrams, clock faces, and honeycombs. Numbers with a base of 3 can show hidden talents you may be oblivious to. This grid helps to open closed areas of your life and hidden prejudices as well as manifest unused talents and skills to enrich your life.

Number 5 crystal grids

Patterns of 5,10, or 20 spokes are based on this crystal pattern which resembles pentagrams. Numbers with a base of 5 show creativity and you can use these grids to manifest creativity, inspiration, new ideas, and connection with your inner child. It can also aid in affairs of the heart, romance, love, and mending broken hearts.

Number 7 crystal grids

Patterns of 7,14 or 28 spokes are based on this crystal pattern. Numbers of 7 are for spirituality (think of 7 chakras and 7 colors in the spectrum) and evolutionary work. These grids are good for timing events (7 days a week, 14 days in a fortnight, 28 for the Moon’s cycle) When used carefully, this grid develops your unconventional side, where your beliefs are unique and not a herd mentality.

Number 9 crystal grids

Patterns of 9,18 or 36 spokes are based on this crystal system. Numbers of 9 are related to karma, spiritual awareness, and universal love. This number also suggests that things will come full circle, with you following your fate and not having free will.

Using crystals for romance, healing, promoting positivity, or getting rid of negativity is well-known. Now you know how to go one step further for a more powerful experience.

Program crystals to magnify your intentions in 5 easy steps

program crystals

To “program crystals” is a bit of a misnomer. Just because you put an intent/program into a crystal doesn’t mean that it can’t be used for anything else. For a start, crystals have their own intrinsic energy, and putting your intent into a crystal simply channels that energy in a certain direction to help you more easily achieve a specific outcome. If you’re looking for a special crystal to program, we can help you find a crystal

Which crystals can I program?

Usually white or translucent crystals such as clear quartz and rock crystals are best for programming as they have a neutral energy. It is true that coloured stones can be programmed, but this will be within the limits of their natural properties. For instance, if you would like to program specific intentions around themes of love or of healing relationships, it would make sense to program a rose quartz crystal with your specific intention. Rose quartz is known as the stone of unconditional love and is often used to support relationships and emotional healing.

clear-quartz

Clear quartz is a great crystal to program as it is very versatile thanks to its neutral energy. Find out more about the wonderful power of quartz crystal. You can also find out more about different crystals and their natural qualities.

When should I program crystals?

cleanse-crystal-with-salt

A good time to program your crystal is after you’ve cleansed itYou should also be in the right frame of mind, relaxed, and in a place where you won’t be disturbed. You may want to put some soft music on, light some incense, or sit somewhere peaceful in a natural setting to help with your frame of mind.

Getting started

STEP 1: To program crystals, we’ve already said that you should get into the right frame of mind, and you can do that by adopting a grateful mindset. Think of all the things you are grateful for.

STEP 2: Now that you’re in a positive mindset, think about what you want your crystal to support you with. Be very specific. Grab a piece of paper and a pen and write down exactly what your purpose/intent is. Make sure your language is always positive, never negative, and keep it short, preferably only one sentence.

STEP 3: Hold the crystal in your hand – it may be your left hand, as this is your receiving side. You may also hold it up to your Third Eye (just above the point where your eyebrows meet). Your body heat will transfer your energy into the crystal. Close your eyes and focus on the goal or intention that you want to achieve. Visualize and feel what it would be like if you had already achieved your outcome.

To program crystals: Get into the right frame of mind – the easiest way is by adopting a grateful mindset. Then think about what you want your crystal to support you with – be specific. Make sure your language is positive and your intention is only once sentence. Hold your crystal in your left hand or against your Third Eye and focus on the goal or intention that you want to achieve, visualising what your outcome would look and feel like. Then say your intention out loud. Close your ceremony.

The speaking part

STEP 4: Next, you’ll say out loud your intent on the crystal. Here are some examples:

  • “I dedicate this crystal to… (and your purpose/request)”
  • “I request that this crystal assist me with (and your purpose/request)”
  • “I program this crystal for… (and your purpose/request)”
  • “I charge this crystal with my intention to… (and your purpose/request)”
  • “I will work together with this crystal to achieve (and your purpose/request)”
  • “Crystal, please assist me with… (and your purpose/request)”

STEP 5: Close your eyes again and envision your desired outcome in the future and feel the whole process. You may then finish the ceremony by saying something like:

  • “And so it is.”
  • “Namaste.”
  • “It is done.”
  • Or a variation of these, closing your intention. You may also want to thank the crystal, yourself, and/or Higher consciousness or Divine Spirit.

Strong visualizer

If you are a person who visualizes well, you can “physically” try and put your intention into your crystal.

Start by taking some deep breaths and close your eyes. Imagine you are somewhere peaceful in nature. Closeby is a giant version of your crystal with an entrance. Have a good look at your crystal, taking in the colors, imperfections, and the sunlight glistening off its exterior. Walk up to the crystal and enter it slowly and carefully.

Upon entering, have a look all around. There may be lots of smaller crystals on the walls, or the sides may be shiny and smooth. Run your fingers over the surface and take in smells from within. How does the sound travel within? You may want to place objects around the interior that may remind you of your intention. When you are satisfied with the inside, you can say your intention out loud. You may even want to imagine pinning the intention on a noticeboard on a wall or scratching the intention on the walls or floor.

I’ve programmed my crystal – now what?

program-cystals-pouch
Crystal pouch

Now that your crystal has been programmed, you may want to keep it close to you—like on your desk, under your pillow, by your bedside, or in your bag. Remember to keep the crystal protected – a soft pouch is great for this. If you are using your programmed crystal for healing, a chipped tip can alter the energy flow and healing power, so all the more reason to keep your crystal protected in a pouch.

You can also wear your crystal as a necklace, ring, or bracelet.

What next?

cleanse-crystal-smoke-clearing

As you can see, to program crystals is pretty easy. You can change the “program” by cleansing the crystal and setting a different intent using the steps just described. You can program crystals as often as you need to – follow your intuition and let it guide you.

The wonderful power of quartz crystal

quartz crystal

What is a quartz crystal?

The Ancient Greeks called quartz ‘krystallos’, meaning ‘ice’, a reference to the clarity of the clear transparent crystals we know as quartz crystal. After feldspar, quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth’s crust. It consists primarily of silica (SiO2) or silicon dioxide. A specific chemical compound that has a distinctive crystalline hexagonal form is referred to as quartz.

Quartz is found in all forms of rock (igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary), but it is formed in igneous rocks. Silicon dioxide dissolves at high temperatures and pressures in magma (underground molten rock). As the magma reaches the surface or cools down for another reason, crystals start to form. The slower the magma cools down, the bigger the crystals.

Quartz is highly resistant to weathering and tends to concentrate in sandstones and other detrital.

Detrital – pertaining to particles of rock derived from the mechanical breakdown of pre-existing rocks by weathering and erosion. Source

The largest quartz crystal was found in Brazil, measuring over 6 meters in length and weighing almost 40 tons! The largest crystal cluster was found in Namibia.

Quartz crystal colors

Quartz is usually clear or white, but can have a variety of colors due to minor impurities. Some are so common that they have their own names. Some well-known ones are:

  • Amethyst – translucent purple crystals
  • Rose quartz – translucent pink to reddish crystals
  • Smoky quartz – translucent grey/brown crystals
  • Milky quartz – cloudy white crystals

Likewise, quartz that is composed of microscopic crystals (chert) can also be found in a wide variety of colors. Common chert color varieties include jasper (red to red-brown), flint (dark gray to black), and onyx (mixed white and black).

Another variety of chert that has distinct bands of color is agate, which has many color variations.

The economic importance of quartz

  • Sandstone, which is mainly composed of quartz, is an important building stone. When whole, it is used to make whetstones, millstones, and grindstones.
  • Quartz sand (also known as silica sand) is used in sandblasting and manufacturing of glass and ceramics, and for foundry molds in metal casting.
  • Many quartz varieties are gemstones, like rose quartz, citrine, amethyst, and smoky quartz.
  • Crushed quartz is used as an abrasive in sandpaper.
  • Silica glass (also called fused quartz) is used in optics to transmit ultraviolet light and has important laboratory applications. Quartz fibers are used for extremely sensitive weighing devices.
  • A quartz plate can be used as a pressure gauge, as in depth-sounding apparatus, due to its piezoelectric properties.

Piezoelectric – electricity or electric polarity due to pressure, especially in a crystalline substance (such as quartz). Source

Quartz crystals for healing

Because of the properties mentioned above, quartz is a high-vibration crystal. It is the most powerful and versatile healing stone. When it comes to health and wellness, quartz can be used by itself or with other crystals to bring alignment, order, harmony, and clarity to any situation. Quartz crystal amplifies energy, which makes it a very powerful channel in manifestation. It aligns all the chakras, heals, grounds, and protects.

Optimal health is ensured by aligning the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies with the etheric body.

As quartz has all these amazing properties, it is widely used to amplify energy. A quartz crystal cluster in a room will amplify that room’s energy. Likewise, even carrying an unpolished, unworked quartz stone in your pocket will amplify your energy fields. Being found around the world in large quantities, quartz is popular and worked into many shapes.

Common quartz crystal shapes

Natural forms are clusters and geodes. Other common clear quartz shapes found are:

Wands

quartz wand

If a quartz crystal is left to grow naturally, it grows in pointed shapes. If the natural conditions are ideal, they will continue to grow. The largest crystals ever found were in a cave in Mexico. See the giant crystals video. Natural crystal wands are very sought after, even if misshaped, as their crystalline structure is intact and they are naturally shaped.

Milled or worked crystal wands are polished and shaped into an obelisk shape. They are usually long and a bit wider at the base than the tip, which has small facets (sides) The wand is usually pointed at an area to be healed or worked on (like a crystal grid). Our post on How to make a crystal grid explains this.

Rock Paradise has a great selection of wands.

Balls/spheres

quartz ball

Due to their unique shape, crystal balls emit energy from their center outwards. They stimulate conscious expansion from within. They are often used to scry and therefore are popular among readers, mediums, and clairvoyants.

Scry – to see what will happen in the future, especially by looking into an object such as a mirror or glass ball. Source.

A wide selection can be found at Rock Paradise.

Eggs

quartz egg

Similar to crystal balls in that they are machined or carved into these shapes, their energy however is directed at the small end. They should be positioned with the pointed end facing upwards to radiate above.

Egg shapes are universally representative of new beginnings, rebirth, and breaking old habits to start anew. Rock Paradise has a good selection.

Skulls

quartz skull

These can be animal or even alien skulls, but are usually carved as human skulls. They symbolize things to do with the mind, such as human consciousness and intellect. Placed in a room, they promote human thought evolution and awareness. They are also good for healing and keeping you safe from unwanted energies. They are also suggestive of past lives from those before.

At Rock Paradise, you can choose one you love.

Hearts

quartz heart

Heart-shaped crystals work with gentle energy dealing with the heart chakra. They will attract loving energy, peace, harmony, and things to do with emotions and feelings. They not only work with attracting love for a partner, but for any loving relationships, whether friends, family, or partners.

Magic Crystals have a wide selection of hearts.

Pyramids

quartz pyramid

The energy of a crystal pyramid is amplified and directed through the point. Use them to amplify positive vibes in your home and encourage harmony and well-being to flow throughout your space. They also act as an energetic charger and cleanser, restoring energy.

For an interesting selection of pyramids, look at Magic Crystals.

There are many other shaped crystals you may want to try out. Different shapes will have different energies. Like any crystal work, it’ll be a personal choice and one shape may work better for you than another. You may also be drawn to a crystal you may not have even thought about before.

Preparing your quartz crystals

When working with crystals for any kind of healing or clearing work, it is advisable to first clear them. Depending on the work you are doing with your crystals, you may also want to program your intention into them. As quartz is an amplifying crystal, this is particularly recommended. To find out how to prepare your quartz crystals, read our article 14 ways to cleanse crystals. Most cleansing methods are quick and easy.

FAQS

Wands are more powerful, especially if they are naturally shaped and their crystalline structure is intact. Sometimes, when shapes are created, the shapes go against the grain, so to speak (the edges or faces may go through the crystalline structure, and not with it).

No, the colors are irrelevant. It’s a personal choice.

Yes, they contain many points and the energy is more concentrated.

Your can cleanse your crystals by holding them under a running faucet for a minute and then pat them dry. Alternatively, find a natural source of running water, like a river or stream. Why not use an indoor or outdoor fountain if you have one?

2. Saltwater

Saltwater is a natural substance that has been used through the ages to banish negativity and absorb unwanted energy. If you live on the coast, collect a bowl of fresh saltwater. Alternatively, mix a tablespoon of sea, rock, or table salt in a bowl of water. Try and use bottled or filtered water. To cleanse your crystals, completely submerge them and allow them to soak for a few hours. Rinse them and pat them dry.

Use this method for hard stones, such as quartz and amethyst, and not for soft, porous crystals or trace metals, such as malachite, selenite, halite, and angelite.

3.  Rice

cleanse crystals rice
Rice to cleanse your crystals

Any rice can be used, although the purer the rice, like organic brown rice, the better. It’s a good, safe method to draw out negative energies from your crystal, especially protective crystals like black tourmaline. Fill a bowl with dry rice, enough to submerge the crystal, and bury it in the rice for about 24 hours. Dispose of the rice immediately after the cleansing, as the rice is believed to have absorbed the negative energy. This method can be used for any crystal.

4. Natural light

Natural light includes sunlight, moonlight, and starlight. Although more potent at certain times, crystals can be put out at any time. For something with two energies, set your crystals out before nightfall and bring them in before 11am, allowing your stones to bathe in both the moonlight and sunlight.

5. Sunlight

Sunlight is a potent cleanser, but not for all crystals. Some crystal like ametrine, citrine, kunzite, rose and smoky quartz will fade over time. They should only stay in the sunlight for a few minutes. Stones can be left on a windowsill, or for a more powerful cleanse, on the dirt outside. Take care with clear quartz – it can heat up in direct sunlight and start a fire if left on a flammable material.

Crystals may still be put outside on a cloudy day. Research varies greatly, but you can leave it outside for anything from 5 minutes up to 12 hours.

6. Moonlight

cleanse crystals full moon
Full moon to cleanse your crystals

As long as the Moon’s out and there’s some moonlight, any crystals can be left out. There’s a more powerful 9-day period during the moon’s cycle which will cleanse them better – waxing gibbous Moon, full Moon and waning gibbous Moon. Moonstone is a powerful stone to cleanse by moonlight. For an extra boost, put your crystals on or near pieces of selenite while in the moonlight.

7. Starlight

When there’s no moonlight, leave your crystals under starlight. As an extra boost, leaving them out from dusk until dawn will give them both starlight and sunlight cleansing.

8. Smoke

Cleanse your crystals by burning dried herbs, or light some incense or a candle near your crystals. Let the smoke waft over them for a few minutes. You could blow the smoke over the crystals with a feather or a fan. Sage has many healing properties and is a favorite method to cleanse crystals. If you’re unable to smoke-cleanse outdoors, try and sit by an open window to allow the smoke and negative energy to disperse through the window. This method can be used for any crystal.

There are many scents to choose from and if you need some inspiration and want a great place to get them, look at The Psychic Tree.

9. Sound

Singing bowls, Tingsha (two small Tibetan cymbals held together by a chain or piece of leather), a tuning fork, a bell, a chime, or even chanting a prayer or mantra can be used to cleanse your crystals. Some people even play musical instruments near the crystals. It’s not important what the sound is, as long as the sound emitted is loud enough for the vibration to fully encompass the stone. This is a popular method for cleansing crystals.

This is also a good method to use for those who have a large volume of crystals and want to cleanse them all at once, as well as large immovable crystals. The method can be used for every stone, for about 5–10 minutes.

10. Using a larger stone

Cleanse your crystals by placing them on or around other crystals. Large quartz clusters, amethyst geodes, and selenite slabs can be used as a base for smaller stones. This is a good method to use, especially if the weather is not suitable for cleansing outdoors. Selenite and clear quartz are believed to be self-cleaning, so never need cleansing. They are great crystals to have in your collection, especially if you’re starting, as you’ll always have cleansing stones at hand.

This method can be used for any crystal. Do it for at least 24 hours, or for as long as you feel is necessary.

11. Using smaller stones

Some smaller stones, such as carnelian, clear quartz, and hematite are also said to have a clearing effect, but you need a fair amount of them. Just put them in a dish or bowl and place your crystal to be cleansed on top of them. This method can be used for any crystal. Do it for at least 24 hours, or for as long as you feel is necessary.

12. Breathwork/Visualization

Breathwork can be used as a cleansing method. Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. Place your crystals in your hands and close your eyes. Start inhaling deep, slow breaths through your nose and exhaling deep, slow breaths through your mouth. As you breathe in, visualize/imagine that you’re breathing in fresh, positive energy or light and as you breathe out, visualize/imagine that the negative energy is being taken out of the crystal and being blown away.

This method can be used for any crystal. Cleanse your crystals by using this method for a few minutes.

13. Dirt/Earth

Crystals can be buried to cleanse them. Find a spot in your garden where the dirt won’t be disturbed. Dig a small hole and place your crystal in it. Cover the crystal with the dirt, mark the spot, and leave it buried overnight or for up to a week. Alternatively, those who may not have gardens, bury them in a box of dirt and bring the box inside. Crystals can also be placed on top of the ground if you’re sure they won’t be disturbed. Take care when digging them back up to not damage them. Rinse them and pat them dry.

14. Charged spray

Distilled/spring water that has been left to charge under the energy of the full Moon becomes “Moon water”, which can be put into a spray bottle and sprayed over your crystals.

Alternatively, use distilled/spring water and place some charged crystals in it. Leave it for a few days to charge the water, and spray this water over the crystals that need cleansing. Make sure you’re only using hard crystals and no porous or brittle crystals. This is another popular method you can use to cleanse your crystals.

Now you have 14 different ways to cleanse your crystals, so go ahead and clear your crystal’s energy.

FAQS

The purer the rice the better. The less processed, fewer chemicals, and less handling the rice has had, the more effective it will be for cleansing your crystal.

The purer the water the better. A lot of our tap water has been recycled, and additives added before it reaches our faucets. We wouldn’t want our crystals to absorb any of those negative energies.

Crystals have vibrational energy. They may be handled by different people, left in an environment that has negative energy, or picked up various energies from different places. Cleansing them is a way to get rid of the negative energy and return them to a neutral state.

  • When you first get them.
  • If you haven’t touched them for a month.
  • If somebody else has handled them.
  • After you have used them to heal other people.
  • If you wish to change the intent in them.

Crystals need to be stored on a soft surface, out of the light. They could be stored in a material pouch individually. Try not to store them in a group, as if they get moved, they may chip or damage each other.

Criteria for grading the apps

I decided not to score or grade the apps, as you’re not getting more for your buck on one versus another one, so to speak. I firmly believe that in today’s world where you get nothing for nothing, so it’s an amazing treasure to find 6 completely free apps. Each one has its strengths and these are how I put them forward in their categories.

I tested the 6 apps with 6 different categories:

  1. “Your meditation journey” while using the app.
  2. Who is the app for?
  3. Different meditation background sounds.
  4. Different languages offered.
  5. Content.
  6. Simplicity/ease of use.

1.“Your meditation journey” while using the app

If you meditate regularly, it is a good idea to keep track of your “personal journey”. This may include different types of meditations, such as sitting or active meditations. You should keep track of your meditational length of time. When you start, you’ll most likely be able to meditate for a very short time. As you progress, your length of time will gradually increase. Some apps will categorise your meditations and either show you a history or break down the categories and show your progress.

2. Who is the app for?

The biggest group using meditation apps is probably adults. Some apps will cater to children, teenagers, and families too. Furthermore, apps may be catered specifically for at work and educators.

3. Different background sounds

Some people prefer meditating to nature sounds. Others may enjoy soft music or common sounds such as bells or bowls. Many people prefer to meditate in silence as it’s less distracting.

4. Different languages offered

Always a good idea to offer various languages, other than English. Fantastic to see Sign Language being offered.

5. Content

It’s probably the most important category, even if the app is free. There are always going to be people who have never meditated and would like some help. It is a good idea to have starter meditations and practice sessions. There should be a range of meditations catering to different levels. Adjustable timers with various options are another great feature.

6. Simplicity/ease of use

You should be able to navigate around the app easily. Different sections should be easily seen and understood. The various screens should be appealing and not too contrasting with colours, too much text, or confusing sections.

15 Essential Oils that are good for sunburn

As we have numerous bottles of Essential Oils between us, we wondered what essential oils would be good for sunburn. We live in a country with lots of sunshine, so it made sense to see if we could find our own remedy for treating sunburn. Here are our 15 essential oils that are easy to get hold of that will be good for your sunburn. By sunburn, we mean when the area goes pink or red.

Few studies have explored the benefits of essential oils for sunburn, but most have found that the oils need to be applied as soon as possible after sunburn to receive the benefits. They recommend that essential oils should not be applied to areas where the skin is very thin or near hormone-regulated organs, like the genitals, eyelids, mouth, and breasts.

Some reminders: Using oils for health conditions is considered complementary medicine and should be done with caution. Please look at our Essential oil-what you must know.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate the production and marketing of essential oils, so there’s no guarantee of their quality. Check in the country you live in for government regulation of products. Don’t delay with medical treatment for moderate or severe sunburns. Symptoms that need medical attention from a doctor, include:

  • Significant blistering on your body
  • A sunburn that doesn’t heal after a few days
  • A high fever
  • Headaches
  • Unrelenting pain, chills, and weakness.

If the sunburn worsens, contact your doctor as it may become infected.

Have a look in your cupboard if you have any of the following 15 oils:

Vitamin E essential oil

Being an antioxidant, Vitamin E Oil will help fight free radicals caused by ultraviolet radiation, thereby soothing sunburns. As it moisturizes and soothes dry, flaky skin, it may help to relieve the burning and itching that results from a sunburn.

Vitamin C essential oil

Ascorbic acid or Vitamin C, may help reduce symptoms of sunburn and improve the healing time relating to it. Crystals have long been revered for their beauty, but did you know that they also possess a powerful energy that can aid in healing?

The origins of crystal healing can be traced back to ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Chinese. These cultures believed in the power of crystals and used them to promote healing and spiritual growth.

In recent times, crystal healing has gained popularity as people seek alternative and holistic approaches to health and wellness.

How does crystal healing work?

crystal-healing-treatment

These beautiful minerals are believed to have different vibrations and properties. Each crystal has its distinct energy that interacts with our body’s energy field, known as the aura. By placing crystals on or near specific energy centers, known as chakras, practitioners believe that the crystals can help to restore balance and remove energetic blockages.

Is crystal healing safe?

While there is limited scientific evidence supporting its efficacy, many individuals report positive results from crystal healing. As with any alternative therapy, safety should be a priority. While crystals are generally considered safe, it’s essential to use them responsibly and consult with a qualified practitioner if needed. They are not intended to replace professional medical treatment but can be used as a complementary practice.

When should you consider using crystals for healing?

Crystals can be utilized for a variety of purposes, including stress relief, enhancing meditation, promoting better sleep, and boosting overall well-being. Some individuals also turn to crystal healing for emotional healing or to support their spiritual journey.

Crystals are used for healing in a variety of ways. Some people carry them in their pockets or wear them as jewellery to benefit from their energy throughout the day. Others place them on specific areas of the body or use them during meditation or energy-healing sessions. Crystals can also be used to infuse water, creating gem elixirs that are said to carry the crystals’ healing properties.

Knowing when to use crystals for healing requires self-awareness and intuition. They can be used for various purposes, such as enhancing energy, promoting relaxation, or facilitating emotional healing. It is essential to listen to your body and trust your instincts when incorporating crystals into your healing journey.
